Sadly, someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant.” - That’s the stark message from local organ donation specialist nurses as they urge people to sign the national organ donation register.
Jaki McAleavey, is one of the specialist organ donation nurses for University Hospitals Tees.
Jaki said: “Most of us would accept an organ if we needed one. But there just aren’t enough to go around.
“Sadly, someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant.
“We know from speaking to people every day that most people would agree to be a donor – but we need them to make that decision clear and signing the register.
“Your loved ones will always be consulted but it helps them to make the right decision if they know your wishes in advance.
“It takes about two minutes to sign the register – it’s the best thing you’ll do today.
“So, if you would like to help up to nine people live after your death, please sign the organ donation register and let your loved ones know about your decision.”

Lisa Tombling is a specialist nurse organ donation at The James Cook University Hospital. Last year, she and her team facilitated 15 solid organ donors, enabling 34 patients to receive a lifesaving or life-changing transplant.
Additionally, 22 corneas were also donated, allowing the gift of sight.
Lisa said: “Are you aware that, sadly someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant?
“More than 12,000 people have died or been removed from the transplant waiting list in the past ten years before receiving the organ they desperately needed.
“Death is not something families usually openly talk about. We know the decision about organ donation is much easier if your family know your decisions in advance. The best thing you can do today is take just two minutes to sign the register.
“Ask yourself would you accept an organ for your loved one, family or even yourself?”
Organ Donation Week takes place from Monday 22 to Sunday 28 September. To register your decision go to, visit the NHS Organ Donor Register.
