Why was I referred?
You may have been referred because symptoms from a known neurology condition are impacting your psychological wellbeing.
The neuropsychology team is here to support your wellbeing and adjustment to living with a neurological condition.
Can somebody attend with me?
We know speaking about your wellbeing can be a daunting idea, especially if you haven’t experienced talking therapy before. If you feel more comfortable to have someone you know and trust with you then they are welcome to join you.
This can also be useful if they can add any additional information to help us understand your wellbeing and support needs. If you choose to bring someone then they can join for part or all the appointment, please speak to us about any preference you may have.
What can I expect from the first appointment?
Once you reach at the top of our waiting list you will be invited to attend a first appointment with one of our clinicians.
The appointment will last up to 1 hour. We will tell you more about our service and ask about your overall wellbeing and how you are coping with the condition.
You will also be asked about your medical history, including previous mental health. If there is anything you would prefer to discuss alone, please make the clinician aware.
The aim of the initial appointment is to assess your current psychological wellbeing and support needs.
If we agree that therapy would be helpful, we will make a plan for this. Sometimes, we may speak to you about alternative services if they seem more appropriate to your needs.
What will happen after the initial appointment?
If you and your clinician think the neuropsychology therapy service is appropriate, then you will develop some therapy aims together.
This will consider ways to support your adjustment to living with a neurological condition. You and your clinician will be able to schedule further appointments together, which will ideally be weekly or fortnightly.
The number and frequency of sessions will be discussed in your initial appointment but is time limited.
Can I find out more or ask questions before I attend?
Yes, if you have any further questions, please contact our department on 01642 854123. A member of our secretary team will take your details and request a clinician to contact you.
