Background
ALT is present in high concentrations in the liver and to a lesser extent in skeletal muscle, kidney and heart. In conjunction with other liver enzyme tests it can aid in the diagnosis of a number of liver diseases such as viral hepatitis, toxic liver necrosis and cirrhosis among others.
