The department runs the laboratory service for haematology in the pathology division at both The James Cook University Hospital and The Friarage Hospital.
We offer a full and comprehensive range of modern diagnostic and therapeutic services treating all diseases of the blood including acute and chronic leukaemias, myeloma, lymphoma, myeloproliferative disorders, haemoglobinopathies, anaemias, bleeding and clotting disorders.
The laboratories work to legally required standards as set out in the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations and assessed by Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
UKAS accreditation
South Tees Pathology Service (excluding the Andrology Service) is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (No. 9210) to the ISO15189:2012 standards for medical laboratories.
Our accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation.
The James Cook University Hospital
The haematology laboratory is based within the pathology department at The James Cook University Hospital. It is a purpose built laboratory opened in 2002.
We are able to offer a wide range of basic and complex investigations including:
- Full blood counts and blood films
- Bone marrow tests including cytochemistry
- Coagulation screens and monitoring of patients on warfarin
- Investigations of bleeding disorders and clotting disorders (factor assays and thrombophilia screening)
- Vitamin assays
- Regional flow cytometry service aiding the diagnosis of leukaemias and lymphomas
- Haemoglobinopathy screening
Please be aware that an automated track deals with the routine haematology workload. If a sample is urgent then this should be highlighted on the request form to ensure the sample is NOT placed on the track but analysed on our dedicated fast track stand alone analyser.
The core laboratory working hours are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. An emergency service runs outside of these hours.

Friarage Hospital
The haematology laboratory at the Friarage Hospital is based within the blood sciences department.
It is a new purpose built laboratory opened in 2007. The laboratory offers a basic range of routine and emergency diagnostic tests including full blood counts, coagulation screens and blood transfusion.
More complex tests are referred to the laboratory at The James Cook University Hospital or to national reference laboratories.
The core laboratory working hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. An emergency service runs out with these hours.

It is requested that only urgent requests are sent in during this time as the department is manned by minimal staff and to allow for machine maintenance. This will help the more timely processing of urgent samples. Routine work should be left for core hours.
