What happens after a TAVI?
After the TAVI you will be taken to the coronary care unit, this is because you will need to be on a heart monitor for a period of time.
You will need to recover in bed for two to three hours before the nurse will help you sit up and begin to mobilise around the ward.
You can eat and drink normally after the procedure.
How long will it be before I am discharged?
A small select number of patients may be suitable for discharge home the same day, but the majority of patients stay in overnight and go home the next day.
Some patients will require slightly longer in hospital.
Your nurse or doctor will be able to advise you on this after the procedure.
Once you are at home
Once you get home you should be able to return to most of your usual activity almost immediately, including bathing and climbing the stairs.
You should avoid straining to lift heavy things and the DVLA advises that you should not drive for four weeks after having a TAVI.
We will ask you to come back to be seen in clinic around six to eight weeks after your TAVI.
We will perform a further echo scan of the heart.
