What happens after a TAVI?
Depending on your progress you will return to either the day unit, cardiology ward or the coronary care unit for a period of monitoring.
You will need to have a period of rest in bed, but the majority of people are able to sit up and mobilise within the first few hours
You can eat and drink normally after the procedure.
How long will it be before I am discharged?
A small select number of patients may be suitable for discharge home the same day, but the majority of patients stay in overnight and go home the next day.
Some patients will require slightly longer in hospital. Your nurse or doctor will be able to advise you on this after the procedure.
Once you are at home
Once you get home you should be able to return to most of your usual activity almost immediately, including bathing and climbing the stairs.
You should avoid straining to lift heavy things and the DVLA advises that you should not drive for four weeks after having a TAVI.
We will ask you to come back to be seen in clinic around six to eight weeks after your TAVI. We will perform a further echo scan of the heart.
