How long have you been in your pharmacy role?
I have been in my current role as a ward assistant technical officer (ATO) since May 2023. I started working at The James Cook University Hospital in November 1988 and eventually joined the pharmacy in 2003 as a stores assistant, I then progressed to pharmacy ATO until May 2023 when I became a ward ATO.
What qualifications did you need and where did you gain them?
I completed the relevant NVQ level two in pharmacy skills and dispensing whilst doing on the job training. I also had an opportunity to do English and Math’s NVQ’s through courses run by the trust.
Tell us something about your role people might not be aware of…
Ward ATOs work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team to contribute to safe care for patients helping the staff on the ward with medication issues to avoid patients missing doses were possible, as well as their responsibilities in the dispensary setting.
What do you like about working at South Tees in pharmacy?
I like the mix of staff I get to engage with and the support I receive from the team. The opportunities and support I have been given from management and the pharmacy team have helped me become more confident and succeed in my role which was brand new to the trust.
