The trust’s pathology service has laboratories located at The James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage Hospital.
Diagnostic testing is an integral part of the healthcare equation.
Almost nothing happens, whether diagnosing a disease or monitoring a therapy, without a laboratory test.
We provide a high quality diagnostic and consultative service to clinical users of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and to primary and secondary care providers in the locality.
UKAS accreditation
The UKAS accreditation to the ISO 15189 standards for medical laboratories for the South Tees Pathology Service (no. 9210) is currently temporarily suspended, pending re-assessment.
All tests performed in the department have been validated/verified for clinical application, but are currently outside the scope of accreditation pending UKAS assessment.
Accreditation status
On-site assessments occur annually to ensure ongoing compliance with these standards.
Conformance to these standards and ongoing accreditation provides assurance to our service users of our commitment to maintain the highest levels of service quality.

Our accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation.
Andrology services are provided, but as a non-accredited service.
The pathology service is licensed under the terms and conditions of HTA (Human Tissue Authority) and complies with regulatory standards as required by MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority).
